VirtualBox and MapleStory (multiple MapleStory,Play on a Mac,Play under Linux))

Purpose
Virtualizing MapleStory enables you to:
Play under Linux (a Windows CD is still required).
Play on a Mac (a Windows CD is still required).
Running multiple MapleStory on the same screen.
Running MapleStory in windowed mode in a different way.
Previously, VMWare is the only option for a very long time (a guide is located over here). Along came Parallels Desktop, providing one of several alternative means for Mac-only users to play MS as well. Now, VirtualBox enters the arena, providing a virtualization software at a bargain deal (free for personal use).

Requirements
A fresh, working installation of Windows (of your choice) running inside VirtualBox
VirtualBox v3.0.0 or higher preferred, although instructions are available for v2.1.x and v2.2.x users
DirectX 9 (for Windows 2000 or lower only)
WineD3D v1.1.19 or later (see below for download links) (for VBox v2.2.4 or lower only)

Installation (VBox v3.x or higher)
Before you start the virtual machine, make sure you have enabled 3D acceleration in the virtual machine's settings.
If you are using Windows 2000 or lower, install DirectX 9. All other operating systems (XP, Vista, 7) can skip this step.
Install the VirtualBox Guest Additions. Reboot when prompted.
(Optional) Verify that Direct3D 8 is working properly:
Start->Run, type in "dxdiag".
Answer "No" for the WHQL question (if necessary).
Click on "Display" tab then "Test Direct3D" button.
Answer "No" to test DirectX 7 textures (it doesn't work due to circular dependency).
Answer "Yes" to test DirectX 8 textures.
You can also test the DirectX 9 textures as well, but it isn't necessary for MapleStory.
Install MapleStory.
Play!

Installation (VBox v2.2.x)
Before you start the virtual machine, make sure you have enabled 3D acceleration in the virtual machine's settings.
Install the provided VirtualBox Guest Additions v2.1.4 CD (do not use the one that came with v2.2.x). Reboot when prompted.
If you are using Windows 2000 or lower, install DirectX 9. All other operating systems (XP, Vista, 7) can skip this step.
Mount the WineD3D iso file into the virtual CD-ROM drive and follow the instructions.
Click on "Cancel" then "Yes" if you are asked to insert the Windows CD-ROM due to replaced system files.
(Optional) Verify that Direct3D 8 is working properly:
Start->Run, type in "dxdiag".
Play!

Installation (VBox v2.1.x)
Before you start the virtual machine, make sure you have enabled 3D acceleration in the virtual machine's settings.
Install the VirtualBox Guest Additions. Reboot when prompted.
If you are using Windows 2000 or lower, install DirectX 9. All other operating systems (XP, Vista, 7) can skip this step.
Mount the WineD3D iso file into the virtual CD-ROM drive and follow the instructions.

Answer "Yes" to test DirectX 8 textures.
You can also test the DirectX 9 textures as well, but it isn't necessary for MapleStory.
Install MapleStory.
Play!

Known Problems
There is a regression in the VirtualBox v2.2.x display drivers, causing it to not work properly with WineD3D. If you already have a VirtualBox v2.2.x installation, you should download the v2.1 Guest Additions CD and use that instead of the one that came with the installation.
On fresh installs of any Windows operating system, it will lack two files that MapleStory complains are missing while you are stuck at a blank screen, but oddly enough it can still run without if you hit the enter key. The missing files are msvcp71.dll and msvcr71.dll, both of which are readily available on systems with .NET Framework v1.1 installed. You can copy these files over from the host to the guest operating system and you will not be stopped at a blank screen again.
Hacking attempt detected from "prolonged" (5-10min) use. Unfortunately, there's no solution for it at this time. Please report your host computer's specifications using the CrystalMarks application here so that more information can be collected, as well as the following questions:
How many instances of the game are you trying to do (that includes both the host and guest)?
If the answer to #2 is more than one, does the hacking attempt happen when only one instance is started?
Have you tried VMWare Workstation on the same computer?
If #3's answer is yes, did you encounter the same hacking attempt after a few minutes of game play?
If #4's answer is yes, is it longer, shorter, or, on average, about the same when compared with VirtualBox?

Tested Operating System combinations
Windows 2000 SP4 (guest) on Windows XP SP3 (host)
Windows XP SP3 (guest) on Windows XP SP3 (host)
Windows XP SP3 (guest) on Windows Vista 64 SP2 (host)
