HP Washing Guide by CoIorPaper

We all know how it feels when you're strong enough to kill a monster/boss but you don't have enough HP to survive it's attacks. Spearmen, Dragon Knights and Dark Knights aren't always readily available to Hyper Body you and even with it, you still might not have enough HP to survive. So what can we do to fix this? How do we gain more HP? In this guide, I'll help you understand what HP washing is and how or if you can do it.

~

What is HP Washing?

HP Washing is when a character takes Ability Points out of MP and puts them into HP. This works because HP and MP use the same type of points (AP). This method is very costly and requires you to have an abundance of both mesos and NX

Should I HP Wash?

Well, the answer to that depends on a number of things. The first thing you need to ask yourself is if you find yourself needing more HP to survive while training or bossing. If so, do you need more HP often? If you only need more HP when you boss and you don't boss very often, then I suggest you just make friends with someone with HB. If you're finding yourself needing more HP to survive constantly, the next question is: Can you afford it? HP washing requires you to buy some expensive equips and spend a lot of NX. If you are currently low on funds and/or don't have access to NX, HP washing is not for you.

Generally, only Thieves, Bowmen and sometimes Warriors should HP wash because Warriors have HP increase which gives them a very high base HP although they usually take the most damage as they are very close to the monsters when fighting and Mages have Magic Guard which transfers most of the HP damage they take into MP. Thieves and Bowmen have extremely low base hp and they both usually boss a lot at higher levels which creates the need for more HP.

Why do I need to HP Wash?

It's not necessary, but it will enable you to be less dependent on Hyper Body when bossing at places like Zakum, Scarlion, Horntail and Pink Bean or even just training at places like Newties and Skeles. It also means you use less pots in the long run.

What do I need to HP Wash?

To HP wash, you must have more base MP (Base MP = Amount of MP you have without wearing any equips that add MP.) than the Minimum MP. What is the Minimum MP? The Minimum MP is the amount of base MP you should have at your level if you were wearing nothing that increased your INT each time you leveled. The difference between your base MP and the Minimum MP is the amount of MP you can reset into HP. How do you have more MP than your Minimum MP? Everytime you lvl, you gain extra MP on top of what you normally get based on the amount of INT you have. People who want to HP wash buy a lot of INT equips that all classes can wear so that just before they level, they can wear these equips and gain extra base mp. This is why INT gears are so expensive. The Minimum MP is the lowest possible amount of MP your character can reset to.

To calculate if you can HP wash, take off all your equips that increase MP and use one of the formulas below to figure out your Minimum MP. If your base MP is higher than the Minimum MP, you are able to HP wash. Most people buy INT gears for washing at a low level so that they have lots of MP to reset into HP. The earlier you start, the better. Most players have around 50 INT in equips.

Min MP Formula for Pirate class = (level x 18) + 111 -To be confirmed-
Min MP Formula for Spearman class = 4 X level + 159
Min MP Formula for Fighter class = 4 x level +56
Min MP Formula for Bow/Crossbow job = level x 14 + 148
Min MP Formula for before 2nd job Thieves = level x 14 – 2
Min MP Formula for after 2nd job Thieves = level x 14 + 148

Let’s assume that you are a Level 200 Thief with 4000 base MP.
The Minimum MP you can reset to is (200 x 14 + 148) = 2948.
So, that means that the amount of MP you can reset into HP is
(4000 Base MP – 2948 Min MP) = 1052 MP

(Formulas and Example is borrowed from here.)

To figure out how many AP resets you will need to use, divide the amount of MP you are able to reset (Base MP - Minimum MP) by 12 (amount of MP lost per point taken away. Only for Thieves and Bowmen. Warriors lose 4 MP per reset, Pirates lose 16 MP per reset) to get around how many resets you will need to use. If the number you get is not a whole number, always round down. You don't want to find out you bought an extra AP Reset that you can't use because you can't go below your Minimum MP

It’s best to start wearing INT items at level 10 to gain the most out of it.

How to HP Wash

Ok, so you've decided that you should and want to HP wash. You've also figured out if and how much MP you can actually remove. Now it's time to actually make the switch. This is where you will require a lot of NX.

To reset MP into HP you will need to purchase "AP Resets" from the Cash Shop. They currently cost 3100 NX each and they only reset one stat per AP Reset so as you can imagine, this can get quite pricey. Sometimes, there is an AP Reset sale where you can buy AP Resets in bundles for a cheaper price than 3100 NX per reset. (Ex; 20 Resets for 20k NX, 10 Resets for 15k NX, 5 Resets for 10k NX)

Method 1. How to HP wash without leveling.

The rule when using AP Resets to take MP and place it into HP is you can only take one AP Point out of MP for every point you put into HP. This means in order to take that first point out of MP and put it into HP, you must put one AP Point into HP. You can do this by putting an AP Point from leveling into HP or by using an AP Reset to take a point out of LUK, INT, DEX or STR to do the same thing. After you place this first point into HP, you can now take a point out of MP and place it into HP. You have now enabled yourself to take another point out of MP and put it into HP. You repeat this until you reach your Minimum MP and can no longer reset anymore.

Method 2. How to HP wash with leveling.

This is a different method of HP washing which gives you the exact same result as method one except you should only try this after you level. The same rule in the first method applies so again, for every point you put into HP, you can take one out of MP. You start by taking one of the AP Points you earned from leveling and putting it into HP. Then, you reset one MP point into your primary stat. (Ex; Thief = Luk, Bowmen = Dex, etc.) From there, you repeat this again, taking another AP Point from leveling, putting it into HP, taking a point from MP and putting it into your primary stat. Repeat this until you have no more AP Points from leveling to use.

What's the difference between Method 1 and Method 2?

Well, there are several differences. In Method 1, if you chose to begin by using an AP Point from leveling to enable yourself to start taking out of MP, you save yourself one AP Reset and assuming you just leveled, you probably put the last 4 points into your primary stat anyways. These are some differences:

1. AP Points from leveling is mandatory for Method 2

2. You have an option to put your remaining AP Points into HP if you did Method 1 by leveling

3. You cannot double/triple/etc. wash with method 2 (placing AP into HP first) because that would require you to take more than one point from MP for every 1 point you put into HP. For double washing see below.

4. Method 1 uses one additional AP Reset more if you chose to take a point out of your primary stat and put it into HP to enable yourself to start taking out of MP instead of using a point from leveling. However, Method 2 gives the exact same amount of your primary stat as HP whereas in Method 1, you get one extra point more in HP and one point less in your primary stat no matter which beginning method you chose in Method 1. What this means is with Method 2, if you used an extra AP Reset more and took a point from your primary stat and put it into HP, you would get the exact same result as if you did Method 1 using an AP Reset to begin.

You're probably very confused but don't worry, below is an example I created which shows you both methods step by step.

Which is better?

Out of the two, Method 1 is better overall. Doing it by using AP Points earned from leveling is the ideal method although many people choose to do it by extra AP Reset simply for convenience. Method 2 was only shown as an alternate way of doing it that some people choose to do which has shown up in several other guides. The only time you should use Method 2 is if you're a Warrior or Brawler because AP Points you get from leveling give an additional boost from HP Increase when you put them into HP.

Double Washing

Double washing is Method 2 except with a few added steps. Instead of putting your AP Points into HP right away, you put them into MP first, then reset your MP into HP, then reset your MP into your primary stat and repeat until your MP reaches the Minimum MP. Why do this? This is done because for every point you put into MP, Min.MP + FLOOR(INT*.075) is added (FLOOR is a programming term which means "round down"), however when you take a point out of MP, only around 12 MP is lost.

This method requires twice the NX as Methods 1 & 2 and should only be attempted if you have INT gears with a total of around 150 INT for Thief/Archer/WA/NW, less than 150 for Warriors/DW and more than 150 for Pirates/TB. (*Looking for Min. INTs for warriors and pirates, leave a comment below if you have them)

Min. MP Gain is 10-12 for Thieves/Archers/WA/NW, 14-16 for Pirates/TB, and 2-4 for Warriors/DW

FAQ

What is the maximum hp that one can have?

MapleStory cap all jobs HP and MP at 30,000 HP and 30,000 MP. (with/without hyperbody)

How much HP do we gain for every point we add?

Every point you take out of MP, takes away 12 MP and every point you reset into HP, gives 16 HP unless you're a warrior or mage. For warriors, they will always lose 4 MP and gain 55 - 60 HP
