Level 16-17 (Appearance of first 3x3 building) | Assuming that this is the most efficient method, this will hold true until level 23 | Total number of usable tiles: 325 | Our 3x3 building takes 9 spaces, for 700 storage. Our 2x2 building takes 4 spaces, for 360 storage. 2 2x2 buildings = 720 storage in exchange for 8 spaces. | The optimal 2x2 building placement is trivial, and shown above. It leaves a total of 28 unused spaces. In order to optimize, we have to change some of the 2x2 buildings to 3x3 such that we get more than 720/700 per space that we utilize. Out of these 28 spaces, we can use up to 17 of them. | 1. 76 2x2, 2 3x3 (28760 storage) 2. 74 2x2, 3 3x3 (28740 storage). 3. 72 2x2, 4 3x3 (28720 storage). 4. 70 2x2, 5 3x3 (28700 storage).
